Anti-Spam Legislation
CANADA’S ANTI-SPAM LEGISLATION (CASL) – JULY 2014
See: The Ontario Non Profit Network Info on Anti-Spam Legislation
CASL requires that a message with a commercial purpose be sent only to individuals who have:
1. Agreed to receive messages (CASL legislation sets out elements of the forms of consent)
2. An existing relationship with the organization (e.g. previously bought event tickets, are a client, etc.) OR
3. Made an inquiry to the organization (e.g. asked about the summer soccer program).
Since most members of TAN have a past relationship with their members, then they do not need to ask permission to communicate with them by email. New member registration/application forms should ask permission to do this.
